Can rock undergo compression, tension, and shear stress all at once? Explain.

Sagot :

It might be possible if you were doing all three on different points of this rock. But you need to consider if it would be possible to basically "push and pull" on the rock at the same time. You might be able to in different places of the rock but never in the same place. hope i helped:)

As per the question we have a rock on which we have to apply compression, tension and shear stress.

A rock is a very rigid body. But there is no body in the universe which is perfectly rigid. Any body under application of force undergoes  deformation.Even if a rigid body undergoes slightest change in its shape.

As per the question we are applying all the three types of pressure and force. If we apply at the same part of the rock, then one force may cancel other. So the rock may not undergo deformation related to three types of pressure and force.

But if we are applying all these three forces on different parts of the rock and the rock being a rigid body,it may undergo all types of deformation. The forces applied  at different parts may not affect all the parts of the rock and they may not cancel each other.

Hence the answer is yes.
