Sagot :
First one :
We divide it into two rectangles (the top one has dimensions 2in*4in)
The area of the top rectangle is 2*4=8 in^2
The second rectangle has dimensions 3*(5-3)=6 in^2
Hence the total area is 8+6=14 square inches
Second one :
We divide it into a rectangle (dimensions 11*17) and a triangle on the top.
The area of the rectangle is 11*17=187 m^2
The rectangle has dimensions 17 (base's length) and 23-11 (height) hence its area is 17*(23-11)/2=102 m^2
Hence the total area is 102+187=289 square meters

For the first shape split the 'L' into two rectangles; one with a length of 5 inches and a height of 3 inches, we'll call is shape J, the other with a height of 4 inches and a length of 2 inches, this one can be called shape K. (I've basically drawn an imaginary line across the middle).
It's a lot easier to work out area this way, simple height multiplied by length.
J = 5 x 3 = 15 inches.
K = 4 x 2 = 8 inches.
Add the two together and you get the area of the whole shape: 23 square inches. *It's important to remember units.*
I don't know for sure how to do the second shape (sorry) but I was asked to help out with this question, so I did. I suggest you split the shape again, but this time into a triangle and a rectangle which is far easier to calculate and area for.
