Fernando de Magallanes, was a military, explorer, sailor and Portuguese navigator of noble lineage. It was named advanced by the Hispanic Monarchy and captain general of the "Armada for the discovery of spices" and commander of the Order of Santiago.
In the service of Charles I, he began in 1519 the expedition in which he discovered the navigable natural canal that today is called the Strait of Magellan, making the first navigation of European origin from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, called hitherto sea of the South.
