This is an interesting question since in other groups such as birds, the number of chromosomes is more or less similar among species. That is, the avian karyotype is quite preserved. However in mammals that does not happen, instead, there is a large variation in the number of chromosomes among species, for example, humans have 46 chromosomes while dogs have 76.
