Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire, because Rome had divided its empire in two halves, but also partly due to his decision to adopt Christianity, and partly due to the geography of the Empire. 

With the new capital, Constantine was able to move his army to many places around the Empire. Because Constantinople was on a vital trade route, he was able to control the trafic flowing through the Bosporous. This allowed the new capital to flourish economically, and outreach Rome.
