"Marriage is a Private Affair" is a short story that was written by author Chinua Achebe and it was published in 1952. In essence, this story narrates the life of three characters: Nnaemeka, Okeke and Nene. Okeke, is Nnaemeka´s father, a member of the Igbo tribe and fierce Christian who upholds all of the Igbo traditions with zeal. Nnaemeka is Okeke´s son and he causes a big rift with his father after he decides to marry a woman who is not of Okeke´s choosing, and who does not uphold the Christian beliefs because she is a teacher. And finally, we have Nene, a woman who lives in Lagos and who becomes Nnaemeka´s wife and the reason for the break-up between father and son. In the end, and after Nene and Nnaemeka get married and have children, despite Okeke´s refusal to accept his son´s choice, Okeke ends up caving in because Nene writes him a letter telling him about his two grandchildren and how they desire to know him. Okeke, during a serious storm, goes to bed worried, and hardly sleeps, because he might die estranged from his grandchildren and his son.
