Sundiata Keita, Lion King of Mali, was a Malinke member of the Keita royal clan. When he became a headman, he acted against Soumaoro Kante (the Sosso king), who was harsh with his subjects. Uniting clans and tribes, Sundiata defeated Soumaoro in the Battle of Kirina. This victory was decisive in uniting the Mali Empire, and an indication of its approaching rise.  

Centuries later, Keita's empire became one of the greatest in Africa.
