1. what are the main parenting practices and why is it important to study them?
Originally Baumind identified eight types of parents but based emphases on only three parenting practices out of the eight originally mentioned. There are various views on the different types of parents and their parenting techniques. However drawing nuances from the different articles, it is evident that the most commonly identified and most valid parenting practices or styles are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful parenting.
Authoritative parents is characterized by setting clear rules and boundaries while also being warm, supportive, and responsive to the child's needs. The parents encourage independence and foster open communication with their children. While in authoritarian, parents are strict and demanding, often using punishment to enforce rules without much explanation. This can lead to a lack of communication and understanding between parents and children. Permissive
parents are lenient and indulgent, setting few rules and allowing children to make their own decisions without much guidance. This can result in children lacking discipline and struggling with self-regulation. Neglectful parenting involves a lack of involvement and responsiveness from parents towards their children. This can have detrimental effects on the child's emotional and behaviora! development.
