For the first exercise in the unit, we’ll be learning to speed-read, an invaluable tool in the research process. Pick a short book that you haven’t read (either your own book or one from a library). Your task is to skim read the entire book and to try to get a sense of its plot. This exercise isn’t about skimming the book as fast as possible, but about learning how to skim at exactly the right speed so that you’re not reading every word, but you’re still retaining a sense of what each page is about. Depending on the length of book you have chosen, this task should take perhaps 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, write down the general arc of plot. If you like, you can then read the book to check your accuracy. You should also describe your speed-reading experience and experience using the site below.
