The Quote (The Center) The center of the quotation sandwich is the quote itself. The quote is simply the text you copy from the source placed in quotation marks.  The phrase in quotation marks is the exact wording published in the article or book. The number at the end of the quotation tells the reader what page number in the published book or magazine the quote can be found.  Not all quotes will have a page number because some quotes may come from websites or other sources that do not publish by page number.  If there is a page number, the punctuation mark to end the sentence is placed after the page number in parenthesis. Example: In her new book, Grit, Angela Duckworth argues “Grit is the passion or perseverance for very long-term goals” (14).
