QUESTION 2
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.
Unemployment: A huge South African problem
64%
South Africa seems to be facing a significant unemployment problem, with an
official joblessness rate reported to be at 32.7% in the fourth quarter of 2022. In
Quarter 1 of 2024, the unemployment rate rose to 32.9%. Although, it may seem
like an insignificant increase, it is still among the highest in the world and that is
concerning. The high unemployment rate is attributed to many factors and
arguments continue about the real cause of unemployment and what is it that
could be done.
At this rate, innovative solutions to counteract unemployment are necessary. We
cannot afford to fold our hands, hoping that government will one day create
adequate job opportunities for all south Africans. Despite the obvious reasons for
unemployment, most young people still opt for education and training that may
results in them seeking for jobs, instead of being skilled to create job opportunities
for themselves and others.
To worsen the situation even further, in most communities, existing entrepreneurs
seem unwilling to openly share their expertise with young aspirant entrepreneurs
which could contribute to their lower level of motivation to try out entrepreneurial
opportunities, thus waging a war against unemployment.
