3(x - 8) - 5 = 9(x + 2) + 1

First, you have to get rid of the parentheses:

3(x - 8) is the same as 3x - 24, so the left side is 3x - 29 .

9(x + 2) is the same as 9x + 18, so the right side is 9x + 19 .

Now, the equation is:    3x - 29 = 9x + 19

Subtract 19 from each side:    3x - 48 = 9x

Subtract 3x from each side:        - 48 = 6x

Divide each side by 6 :                - 8 = x

(I guess the answer is not 7.166 after all.)
