It is the process in which green plants make their food through a green pigment known as Chlorophyll by using sunlight, Carbon-dioxide and water. The result comes out with the formation of Oxygen as a byproduct. But in night they also respire like animals and photosynthesis does not occur. Photo means light and synthesis means manufacture.

Photo means light. Synthesis refers to manufacture. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants manufacture their own food which is mainly carbohydrates or starch in the presence of sunlight under the influence of a pigment called chlorophyll which acts as a biological catalyst and by using carbon dioxide and water as the raw material. This process results in the evolution of oxygen gas.
