Its low frequencies produce waves that can travel great distances and skip off the ionosphere with ease and efficiency. Before the 1920s, shortwave frequencies over 1.5 MHz were reserved for amateur use since they were thought to be ineffective for long-distance communication. In the 1920s, shortwave communications saw a tremendous expansion. Shortwave had replaced transoceanic cables and longwave wireless services for more than half of long-distance communications by 1928, and its overall volume had greatly expanded. Compared to large-scale longwave wireless installations, shortwave stations were more economical and efficient.
