The North flourished throughout the Industrial Revolution while the South used slavery to preserve its culture and cultivate cotton on plantations. Due to an inflow of immigration, northern cities—the hub of industry in the United States—became significant metropolises. The North did not need a slave system because of this ready and affordable labor force.
While the majority of northerners did not want complete racial equality, some did find the system of slavery to be morally repugnant. Because non-slaveholding white immigrants did not want to compete with slaveholders in the new territories, slavery became even more contentious when it threatened to extend westward.
