The stage of the General Adaptation Syndrome which Emma will be experiencing first is alarm.
What is the General Adaptation Syndrome?
General adaptation syndrome (GAS) defines the process the body goes through when being exposed to any kind of stress, positive or negative. If the stress that has triggered GAS is not resolved, it can lead to physical and mental health problems.
General adaption syndrome consists of three stages:
- alarm,
- resistance,
- exhaustion.
In the alarm stage, the body shows changes characteristic of the first exposure to the stressor. These changes generally coincide with the sympathetic discharge which enables the fight-or-flight phenomenon. If the stressor continues and is compatible with adaptation, features of the alarm reaction disappear and resistance develops. Prolonged exposure to the stressor may result in exhaustion and finally death.
