Why do plants need to respire?

Respiration is an essential characteristic of all living organisms, including plants. During respiration, living organisms are able to extract energy from the foods they consume and this energy is used to drive the various metabolic processes that sustain life, including respiration itself.

Plants are able to carry out aerobic respiration. During this process, carbohydrates (generated during photosynthesis) are broken down in the presence of oxygen through a series of reactions including an electron transport chain.

At the end of the day, the energy in the carbohydrates is extracted, usually in the form of ATP. Carbon dioxide and water are generated as by-products of the reaction.

The process is divided into 2 main stages:

  • Glycolysis
  • Kreb's cycle
  • The electron transport chain

All in all, plants need to perform respiration in order to obtain the energy that is necessary to sustain life.
